"I am a disabled senior citizen and am raising three grandchildren. I have many doctor appointments and can't afford the gas. I am "sick" of both parties. At least "Do something" even if it is wrong - just make a decision for the "People" not to line their own pockets. Give us and all military/veterans a decent pay raise without taking it back. Example: Congress takes a 5% increase and give Social Security a 3% but take 3/4 of it back.Look at the numbers: Congress $150,000 x .05 = $7,500. Soc. Sec. $900 x .03 = $27.00. That's not much for us. Next point: Gas is $4.00/gal and we can't drill because it will take 10 years to produce. What will the cost be 10 years from now if we don't drill? Drill Now "And" build refineries, nuclear power plants, wind, solar, and encourage research on automotive. Just ger started now not in September or next year."

"Vacation is gone, savings gone, food prices are through the roof, can't get a raise. In short I am disgusted with Washington politics!!!If the politicians keep playing political games with the American people then I feel sure both parties are in deep trouble.. They better wake up and do the job they were hired to do or get ready to get replaced! We the people hired them and we the people can fire them..."

"Well Pelosi is working with Obama, for if they voted on drilling Obama would have to vote. If he voted no then that would go against him on the rebulican side, and if yes would make his base mad. So they are just trying all poilitical angles to get in the white house. They do not caRE ABOUT THE aMERICAN PEOPLE just whose rear is in the oval office and as long as it had a D at the end"

"Hello All, I am on the budget plan for heating oil. I just rcieved my first bill for the comming heating season. We are all facing a disaster.I don't know how I can survive the increase in fuel costs. I installed new windows before last years heating season and the effects have been insignificant for my budget. I have been watching closly what the legislators have been doing about this and am ready to go door to door to alert my neighbors of the coming crisis. the prices at the pump pale to the burden this will place on families please keep the pressure on! thank you for your efforts."

"Nancy Pelosi recessed Congress today for vacation for the month of August. She refused to let there be an up or down vote regarding drilling for oil. She literally turned the lights, mikes and TV cameras off while men & women were trying to speak. BUT, some of our Congressmen/women stood (in the dark) and tried to get the Democrats attention. GOOD FOR THEM. Now, we "the people" need to contact the White House and implore the President to call Congress back into session. He has the power to override her vacation dismissal and call them back. We need him to know that we support that action. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to speak up and support and encourage our Congressmen. They need to know that they are doing what we want and what needs to be done to make our country independent of our use of foreign oil. What if our "suppliers" decided to cut us off completely? Do you know how our lives would be changed? Don't try to store your food in the fridge, NO PLASTIC. Don't get sick, NO MEDICINE. Don't worry about gas for your cars, NO TIRES. Not to mention defense. It's time we wake up and smell the coffee - oops, oil's used in the plastic in the pot. NO COFFEE!"

"I am encouraged at the sudden response of the members of congress to the wishes of the overwhelming majority of their constituency. We need to drill wherever we can. This oil will be needed to enable us to transition over time to alternate sources of energy. It just makes sense to use our resources to reduce our dependency on unfriendly sources. I believe that making the decision to drill will immediately reduce the price of oil as well. Is it true that the moratorium on drilling runs out at the end of the current fiscal year? If so lets just let it run out and begin drilling Oct. 1."

"I checked my tire pressure and they were all ok, why did it still cost me $90.00 to fill up?"

"I live in Nogales, az and my family lives in Bangor, ME. Because of the fuel, prices airline tickets are gone up. I am married and have a 3 year old son. It cost to much to fly all of us back to visit family. My son has not seen his grandmother for over a year now. Until tickets come down we can not travel back to see them. It is very hard being way out here and not having family around."
Kevin

"Pres. Bush removes presidential order, gas prices drop. Congress proposes legislation, gas prices drop. Guess what will happen if Drill Here, Drill Now really pushes and drilling, along with other energy sources, are opened up in this country."
Bob
Phoenix, AZ

"Lift the ban on offshore drilling! What are you waiting for? We have it now go out and get it! Stand up to the tree hugging Nancy Pelosi and get to work. I drive a suburban and would not trade it for the world. I'm an American and I want the biggest and the best. The people of this country have spoken and if you work for us like you say you do then do what is in the best interest of the people and not the animals that don't even pay any damn taxes! Republicans do not let me down on this one!"

"I was working for an aerospace company that paid me very nice but the commute was a little long, especially in Ca. I started seeing my income decreasing and I did the math, I ended up quiting my job to take a lesser position at another company in sales (not even the area I went to college)and after a $2.00 an hour pay cut and a smaller commute I actually make more than if I was to stay with a high paying job with a commute. I want to understand if I make less than I pay less taxes and now Democrats in California want to raise taxes for there over spending. Did the Democrats ever take a math course in there studies?"

El Segundo, CA

"Yes, the earth is everybody's responsibility and we all need to lessen our dependence on oil by more than just our cars. Oil is also used to make plastics and to run energy plants. Dependence on foriegn oil is just ONE part of the problem. Yes we need to have more hybrid or electic cars but we really need to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. It just makes sense."
DeeAnne
Denver, CO

"I guess we prefer that China takes all the oil off OUR shores, rather than get it for our own nation. I would like the U.S. to pursue all possibilities to free us of dependence on Arab nations for oil. We can learn from countries already using nuclear, sugar (Brazil) and other biofuels, wind, solar. We need the same attitude we had in WWII to protect this nation. Let's get it done. American CAN-DO can make it happen. We need leadership at the top. We cannot afford to drift another 10 years. Congress is fiddling while Rome burns. Every day another company is cutting back and people are unemployed."
Judy
Danville, KY

"I was blindsided today by an email forwarded to me describing the Bakkin Oil Formation in the Montana, N. Dakota and Canadian area. Have I missed this in the news? While I am not opposed to drilling off shore or in our country, I am deeply concerned that a large discovery of reserves in the USA would encourage many people to carry on as we have done for the last several decades. There MUST be an incentive to live with sustainable resources. Whether a person believes in global warming or not, it makes no sense to use a limited resource, and to suffer the consequences of that use, when clean unlimited sources have existed all along."
Sharon
Fairmont, WV

"Poor Kate, You simply accept the illogical comments of your tree hugging friends that the economy can adapt to an entirely new source of energy in only 7-10 years. Please, did you go to public schools? Have you converted your home to solar and wind power only? Has Al Gore? As a matter of fact, Al Gore's home uses more energy in just the new "energy efficient" wing he added over the last two years than my entire 4000 square foot home. You and he have no right to tell us what to live without until you are willing to lead the way. Please, lead on...and oh, by the way, demonstrate your good faith by not wasting electricity posting messages through the electronic medium known as the Internet...unless you can do that on solar power."

"To those who want alternate energy sources: of course we need to go this way and reduce the use of oil as a primary energy source BUT right now we are sending $800 billion dollars a year OUT of our country to nations who hate us to buy oil we have right here. Keep the money and use our own oil. Saving billions and keeping the money here in this country would go a long way toward developing the alternate energy sources we need. Drilling for oil here is not THE answer but it is necessary to allow us to get across the gap between the oil energy era to the renewable energy era. Not everyone is going to switch to eating granola and walking everywhere to get across this gap. Not drilling here now will result in much worse scenarios."
William C.
Buford, GA

"I'm a native Californian all I ask is that you keep the hell off our beautiful coast.....and all others, as well as ANWR. This petition is such a hoax. Haven't the Repubs had enough time to do all this...well, they failed and they should loose this election. We need to get off our addiction not feed it. The environment is far more important than the oil. Newt is well, a newt."

Sebastool, CA

"This should not be a political issue at all.We should get away from futures investing in anytype of energy or food. It's being fueled by these people in wich are very very fiew.Drill in Alaska.Drill all over.GO GO GO.Take the federal hand cuffs off the oil companys and let them DRILL DRILL DRILL.Turn the federal reserve open a very very small amount. The oil would come down over night to less then 30.00 a barrel.BUT!!!Make the BILLION dollar oil companys spend the billions on reserch to HYdrogen and make them tool up on there dime, not on the backs of the working class.AND... what the Hell are they, the Auto companys making 500 horse power cars and trucks. If you can prove that you need one yes , to parade around town. NO!!!!I know kind of weird but stop making so many SUV's now idiots."

Half Moon Bay, CA

"Why can't we start a grass roots movement together to force a vote. The majority of Americans are tired of being prisoners to foreign oil. I'll contribute money to start something going. Let's face it politicians don't care about us only their agenda."
John F.
La Quinta, CA

"I have had my fill of our Congress & House Reps linining their pockets at the expense of the tax payers. They are elected to represent us, not to do what is best for them! The gas price is killing us. Vote to open up drilling now or if they are up for re-election and vote no don't hold your breath!"
Bill T.
Wapakoneta, OH

"Yes BP and Exxon don't have enough money - please let them drill anywhere they want. I still haven't figured out how the democrats were able to let the gas prices double while George Bush (former oil tycoon and BFF of the president of Saudi Arabia) was in office. How stupid do the republicans think we are."

"One woman, nancy pelosi, is preventing us from becoming energy independent. Great job putting her in power Democrats."

"We are not going to be totally free from fossil fuel anytime soon ! Not everyone can afford a Prius or a hybrid Silverado which still guzzles 20mpg. Trucks won't be going hybrid or electric anytime soon ! We need gas(cheap) for all of these vehicles. We need to be ENERGY INDEPENDENT and that means all types of energy. Drilling for oil will increase our supply tremendously in a far shorter time than it will take to convert all gas driven vehicles to electric. let's be realistic ! The fact is prices will go down once the supply is increased. Once we get more oil, how about trying to sell this oil around the world and using that money or profit to pay for our national debt. Cheaper gas will help the world economy and that is the truth. More expensive gas is already ruining economies around the globe. Inflation is skyrocketing everywhere from Europe to Asia. The US can definitely make the world a lot better and safer if we can just be given the chance to start DRILLING now! NOT DRILLING only benefits OPEC members and not Americans."

"This is the second online petition I have signed to solicit some action from The Hill to address this critical issue. I have a 90 mile round trip commute to work, and I am spending 100 to 150 dollars a week on gas. Bush opened the door for action and we have seen nothing. I hope the voters remember this come November. I know I will."
Denise F.
Round Hill, VA

"I am amazed at the levels of ignorance shown here in many of the comments. Apparently nobody realizes that the break-even price, the price it costs oil producing countries to produde oil, averages between 40 and 50 and maybe 60 American dollars. People actually believe that a single barrel of oil really is worth over $100, when it's not. It isn't inflation that's driving up prices, nor is it the declining value of the US Dollar, it is simply greed. People who have money always want more and they are never satisfied until they get it. The petroleum industry is a giant Enron-like corrupted machine and they will do anything to make an extra buck. In the recent weeks the price of oil dropped $20 but the price of gas has only dropped a hundful of cents. Gas should have gone down 60 to 70 cents, not one tenth of that. That fact alone proves the existence of corruption and any person that cannot see this seriousely needs to have their head examined. It's people like these that made the Great Pacific Garbage Patch possible."

Tallmen, NY

"Reed and Pelosi are telling everyone that even if we drill now that we will not see the oil and gas hit the market for ten years. Americans have always been able to meet a challenge when called upon to do so. If the above two office holders will just get out of the way we will have domestic drilling bring oil and gas to the American Public in short order. I remind every one that during World War II this country built the Alcan Highway in nine Months starting in March 1942 and completing construction on Nov. 20 1942. We meet that security Threat and if the Politicans will just get out of the way we can meet our current enegery needs."
John R.
Allen, TX

"We have 5 kids. Small cars aren't really an option. We no longer eat out and with the rapidly rising food prices almost all of our expendable income is gone. If the USA starts producing its own energy we will drive down the speculative market and bring these insane gas prices to earth."
Ray B.
Powder Springs, GA

"I just dont get it; aren't we the people in charge?"

"I would not vote for a Democrat this year if my life depended on it. Well maybe it does; but I still will not vote Democrat. They have been in office much too long and are doing nothing. They are good at bashing Bush but he will not be in office next year. If they put as much effort in helping America we would not be in this mess now. Please let them know how much we want them out of office."
Thomas B.
West Haven, CT

"Oil rose $2.67 today primarily based on the possibility that tropical storm Dolly may become a hurricane. If a hurricane does develop there will most assuredly be another price increase. For US oil independence to come from any new domestic drilling efforts something has also to be done about the excessive speculation. If a tornado wipes out a few wells in Texas, I would expect the price to rise because a true supply & demand condition. When the Biust Administration, the CFTC and Congress enforce rules addressing excessive speculation in the oil market, I will sign your petition to allow drilling."
